Holden has been New Zealand’s favourite since a very long time. Until 1994, its parent company was General Motors New Zealand Limited, a subsidiary of General Motors of Detroit. This company was established in 1926 to build and operate a local assembly plant. However, in 1990 the assembly of vehicles ended abruptly and since then they are in the business of distribution of complete imported vehicles and spare parts.
They used to distribute General Motors’ vehicles, engines, components and parts in New Zealand. Buick, Chevrolet, Oakland, Oldsmobile and Cadillac were the most established cars before the first world-war. Their popular car British Vauxhalls continued to be the common household’s brand even well after the second World-War.
Two assembly plants used to operate those days. Their Petone assembly plant was opened in 1926 & was sold in 1984 and the Trentham plant which was opened in 1967 was closed in 1990 after General Motors announced the complete phase out of the assembly plant.
During the late 1980s, General Motors New Zealand attempted to have “GM” as the main brand which consisted of Suzuki Swift, Holden Barina, Pontiac LeMans (imported from Korea), Opel Vectra, Opel Calibra, Holden Commodore, Holden Piazza etc. Commercial vehicles were branded as Isuzu.
From 1994, with Holden’s future started to look more secure, General Motors New Zealand changed the name to Holden New Zealand. Early models of the Holden were Astra and Vectra. Holden Jackaroo, Isuzu Bighorn, Holden Frontera, Isuzu Wizard were also introduced.
The Holden Dealer’s Network consists of nationwide over 40 authorised Dealers and service centres, promoting Holden products and services. Holden’s Head Office is located in 2/118 Savill Drive,
Mangere East 2024, MANUKAU.
